What Is Diamond Clarity?

A diamond's clarity refers to the degree at which naturally occuring imperfections or flaws are present under magnification. Diamonds containing a significant amount of these flaws will have less apparent radiance or glow due to interference of light reflection through the diamond.

Types of Diamond Flaws

Virtually all diamonds will contain a visible amount of imperfections or flaws typcially known as:
     (i) inclusions: naturally occuring imperfections or flaws within a diamond
(ii) blemishes: imperfections or flaws occuring on the surface of a diamond

Diamond Clarity Scale

A diamond's clarity is graded on a scale from FL (Flawless) to I3 (Included) which refers to the degree at which the above imperfections are present under magnification. In grading a diamond's clarity, an accredited gemologist will consider the type, size, color, reflectivity, and position of every visible flaw.

How Clarity Affects Diamond Cutting

The position of an inclusion affects how easily it can be seen. Diamond cutters make every effort to cut a stone so that inclusions are not visible through the table of the finished diamond. The preferred position for inclusions is under the bezel facets or near the girdle because they are harder to see there.
